American Vignette: Call for Submissions
May 10, 2014 § 9 Comments
vignette (vɪˈnjɛt) – n.
1. a small illustration placed at the beginning or end of a book or chapter
2. a short graceful literary essay or sketch
Reader, blogger, and creative nonfiction essayist Andrea Badgley is seeking submissions for American Vignette: Show Us Your State, a creative nonfiction component of her Andrea Reads America project.
What she wants:
In fewer than 800 words – in a “short graceful literary essay or sketch” – describe a scene that captures a sense of place in your home state (home may be your childhood home, your current home, or anywhere in between). The sense of place may be evoked through landscape, food, culture, ecology, colloquialisms, or any distinctive element of the state you call home. Your vignette must be set in a state you have lived for a minimum of three months. Diversity is a core value of the Andrea Reads America project, so authors of all genders, colors, and heritages are encouraged to submit. Previously published work is welcome.
Full submission guidelines can be found here.

Oh yes. This is cool. Vignettes are making a comeback.
Hey there groover. Will you be chasing international submissions for a similar project to this? I only ask as it is a wonderful idea.
Secondly, when you ask for ‘American’ vignette, is this isolated to just the US, or all of America (all 37 countries)?
Cheers,
Hamish
Hi Hamish, this is a call for US-set submissions for a current project of reading work from each of the 50 US states. Perhaps when I’m done with that (in a few years) I will read around the world ;-). I do plan to post some prompts for international readers as a part of the American Vignette series to open it up. Thanks for asking.

I thought some of you lovely folks might be interested in this. 🙂
I wish I could work up the time and energy to do more of these challenges.
